saying that he is “sorry to say that Jack got a rather severe blow on the head at a riotous scene after the Bump Supper ... This has interfered with his work for some days but I hope he is nearly right again now. The riot was a bad one & seems to have been generally participated in by the men who attended the Bump Supper but not I think by Jack - The men got for a time quite out of hand and the men who were more or less in charge quite failed to keep order. I have seen Wickham Legg & find that his reading party is quite filled up. I have recommended Jack to try whether Mr Jeffreys of BNC could take him. He is, I believe, an excellent teacher. If this should fail I will try to hear of some other reading party which may be going ...” with a postscript that he and seen “Jack again & he tells me that Mr Jeffreys is also full. Background

Leopold George Wickham Legg (1877-1962) was an Oxford don from 1908 to 1948, he was a Fellow of New College. The recipient is probably Arthur Edgel EASTWOOD (1860-1949) of Leigh Court, Taunton, Somerset, who attended New College, Oxford. He graduated with a B.A. in 1881, and with an M.A. in 1885. At Oxford or Cambridge, a “Bump supper” is a celebratory dinner held after certain kinds of victories by boat crews in competitive rowing. “BNC” stands for Brasenose College in the University of Oxford. (Old spellings of the name of the college were sometimes tripartite, such as “Brazen Nose College”, hence the three initials rather than two.)
