Fine Autograph Letter Signed to Sir Frederick YOUNG
(1817-1913, Traveller and writer on Imperial Affairs) saying that he had arrived back to Dublin and found the newly issued Report of the Royal Colonial Institute. It was an excellent idea to place on the opening page a facsimile of the Address which was presented to you last June, an occasion so interesting & notable in itself, & on e which must ever remain a source of gratification to yourself... My functions here cause me... somewhat a stranger in London, & as I did not have the opportunity at the time of joining personally in the greetings offered to yourself. Background
From a collection of letters to Sir Frederick Young. He was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland for the second time in 1905, and served until 1915. During his tenure he also served as Rector of the University of St Andrews (1913–1916), was created a Knight Companion of the Order of the Thistle (1906), and was created a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (1911). Young promoted the permanent union of the colonies with the United Kingdom, and published works on imperial federation and the empire. He also travelled widely, visiting Canada, Greece, South Africa and Turkey. In 1869 he began an association with the Royal Colonial Institute that was to last for the rest of his life.
