DEVONSHIRE

(Spencer Compton Cavendish, 1833-1908, from 1858 Lord Hartington, from 1891 8th Duke of)
Long Autograph Letter Signed 'Devonshire' to  Sir Frederick YOUNG
(1817-1913, Traveller and writer on Imperial Affairs), apologising for his late reply in consequence of many engagements since my return to town, I have only recently heard that it may be necessary for me to go to the Riviera in attendance on the Queen during a part of her stay there. The arrangements for the Ministers in attendance on Her Majesty are not yet made & can hardly be finally... till more is known as to business in Parliament, but I think it is extremely likely that I may have to be abroad during the latter half of March. Under these circumstances I fear that it would be impossible for me to make an engagement for the 30th March or any date about that time... 1 side 8vo., Devonshire House, Piccadilly, 24th January

Background
As Secretary for War, (1882-1885), Lord Hartington was partly responsible for sending Gordon to the Sudan and for the failure to rescue him from Khartoum. In 1886 he split from Gladstone over Home Rule for Ireland and with the radical Joseph Chamberlain founded the Liberal Unionists. From a collection of letters to Sir Frederick Young. Young promoted the permanent union of the colonies with the United Kingdom, and published works on imperial federation and the empire. He also travelled widely, visiting Canada, Greece, South Africa and Turkey. In 1869 he began an association with the Royal Colonial Institute that was to last for the rest of his life. Queen Victoria became a prominent visitor to the French Riviera, particularly Menton and Nice, starting in 1882, and her visits helped solidify the region's reputation as a luxurious destination. She first visited Menton in 1882, staying at the Chalet des Rosiers, and was enchanted by the area, returning multiple times. Her presence on the Riviera, even in her later years, brought a sense of regal respectability to the region, and she seemed to enjoy her time there immensely, even being described as acting like a 17-year-old despite being in her 70s.
