thanking him for his sweet letter! It almost makes me feel ashamed, because my part was so trifling & you made it such a pleasure. When I realise the amount of hard work, selflessness and community spirit that goes into such labours as yours those of all the other sellers and organisers and realise, as well, the inequalities of fortune, the hard realities that make such labours necessary, I ask myself (not for the first time) what the hell my 'celebrity' is founded on, I feel dreadful qualms about any bases in life, and wish I were a quite different and better kind of person. I was so glad to meet you and to talk of mutual friends and I shall look forward very much to seeing you again. I am half thinking of moving to London next year - and then the chamber music evenings will be something to look forward to...

Background
Her first novel, Dusty Answer (1927), was a succès de scandale; she subsequently became established in the literary world, and intimate with members of the Bloomsbury set. Her novel The Ballad and the Source received particular critical acclaim. The correspondent is Sheridan RUSSELL (1900-1991) who was a cellist, hospital social worker, and patron of the arts. He was Head Almoner at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and founded the Paintings in Hospitals charity.
