Background
These stools were designed by Edward Barnsley (1900-1987, Designer and maker of Furniture and an important figure in the 20th century British Craft movement) and used at the coronation of George VI in 1937. There were 5700 stools made for the coronation by various different furniture makers. They were all made to very strict tolerances and inspected by Government officials before being stamped with the GR VI Crown. They were all made in oak, finished with a silver wax paste that went in to the open pores of the timber giving them a silver hue. These were then upholstered in a specially woven blue velvet and gold braid. This stool is all original and stamped on the underside with maker's name and GR Coronation with a crown above. It is in excellent condition with minor discoloration of the fabric. Width 18, Depth 12, Height 17
