PAGET

(Sir James, 1814-1899, Surgeon, surgeon extraordinary to Queen Victoria)
Autograph Letter Signed to Dr Atwood
saying he would admit Mrs Campion but I am sure her tumour cannot be cured except by cutting it (and even then it will, probably, return) and I greatly doubt whether she is at all fit to undergo a severe operation. Perhaps if you could explain this to her she will not wish for the operation, but if she does, I will pursue her admission..., I Harewood Place, Hanover Square, 18th June

Background
Paget was an English surgeon and pathologist who is best remembered for Paget's disease and who is considered, together with Rudolf Virchow, as one of the founders of scientific medical pathology. Sir James's reputation remains high due to his work as a surgeon and medical research and work, but he also had an apparent interest in criminal matters. His greatest achievement was that he made pathology dependent, in everything, on the use of the microscope, especially the pathology of tumours. Paget had for many years the largest and most arduous surgical practice in London. He was often sent cases of tumours, and of all kinds of disease of the bones and joints for a second opinion. He was the first to urge removal of tumours.
