Background
He is best known for his biographies of Louis XIV, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, Catherine the Great and Napoleon, as well as for his books on the Renaissance. He was the son of Scottish physician and novelist A. J. Cronin. From the papers of Josephine Pullein-Thompson. She was a leading member of the Pony Club and PEN International. Her mother and two sisters, Christine and Diana also wrote.
