Background
Princess Sophie was the daughter of Queen Victoria's eldest child, Victoria, Princess Royal, and her husband Frederick III, German Emperor. The Queen often hosted her large extended family at Osborne House, her private seaside residence on the Isle of Wight. In 1882, at the age of 12, Princess Sophie was part of the generation of grandchildren who spent time at Osborne. Queen Victoria was very involved in the lives of her grandchildren and kept in close contact with her daughter, Sophie's mother, as detailed in their extensive correspondence.
