Background
Augustus JOHN (1878-1961) painted an important portrait of Yeats in 1930. It was painted when both men were guests at Oliver St John Gogarty's house in Connemara. John was elected a Royal Academician in 1928 and was at the height of his career as a portraitist during this period so it is likely that he was the recipient of this letter.
