Background
Ismay was a politician, diplomat and general in the British Indian Army who was the first secretary general of NATO. He also was Winston Churchill's chief military assistant during the Second World War. He was Lord Mountbatten's chief of staff when he was Viceroy of India and helped preside over the transition to Independence. Ava was styled as Lady Anderson from 1941 until 1952. She was a political and social hostess at the centre of government during the Second World War. Winston Churchill noted her contact with gt. affairs. It was said that she had more indirect influence than any woman of her generation.
