GAITSKELL

(Hugh Todd Naylor, 1906-1963, Labour Politician)
Fine Autograph Letter Signed to My dear Ava, LADY WAVERLEY
(1896-1974, wife of Sir John Anderson, Viscount Waverley) explaining that he is writing to her rather than her husband as I am not sure whether he is seeing letters. Being away in India and... seeing the English newspapers only intermittently, I only heard on my return about the O.M. I am so glad about this. There can have been few more worthy recipients. Will you please... pass my very warm congratulations - belated as, I'm afraid, they are? You, I know, must have been having such an anxious and difficult time. Dora joins me in sending our best wishes and the prayer that all will be well..., 2 sides 4to., House of Commons headed paper, with original autograph envelope, 3rd January postmarked

Background
Ava was styled as Lady Anderson from 1941 until 1952. She was a political and social hostess at the centre of government during the Second World War. Winston Churchill noted her contact with gt. affairs. It was said that she had more indirect influence than any woman of her generation. It was intended that her husband should be awarded the Order of Merit in the 1958 New Year Honours but an operation on 17th August 1957 revealed that he had pancreatic cancer, and it was feared he would not live long enough to receive it, so Queen Elizabeth II made an immediate award, which was conferred at his hospital bed. He died on 4th January 1958 in St Thomas' Hospital, the day after this letter was written. He was buried in the churchyard in Westdean
