Background
Sir John Anderson had held many important posts in the Civil Service, also the Governorship of Bengal, when in September 1938 he became responsible for air-raid precautions in London and the Home Counties, commissioning the famous 'Anderson Shelter'. Now an M.P., he piloted the Civil Defence Bill through the Commons. In such ways Anderson played a vital role both before and after the outbreak of war.Ava was styled as Lady Anderson from 1941 until 1952. She was a political and social hostess at the centre of government during the Second World War. Winston Churchill noted her contact with gt. affairs. It was said that she had more indirect influence than any woman of her generation.
