Fine Autograph Letter Signed to Mrs Mitchell
thanking her effusively for an invitation to visit I shall hope to be able to do so about the third week in August when I expect to leave... for the Lower country - and while showing my little Yankee girl all the interesting places of that region loved of poets, it will be a very great pleasure to me to show her the pretty place where I have spent so many pleasant hours where your kind and obliging offer of hospitality makes me feel sure of the same friendly welcome that I have hitherto always found there. Dear Mrs Mitchell I will write to you... from Ambleside... when we are likely to come to Scotland... it will be a great pleasure to me to become better acquainted with the dear daughter of my dear friend Jane..., 4 sides 8vo., 5 Wilton Place, Sunday 26th no date
Background
Fanny Kemble, daughter of Charles and niece of Mrs Siddons, first appeared on the stage in 1829 as Juliet, when her father was threatened with bankruptcy, never having acted before. In 1834 when touring America with her father, she married Pierce Butler, 1807-1867, but disliking her husband's ownership of slaves, spent time away acting and giving readings in America and England, leading to their divorce. In 1877-1878 she returned permanently to London to live alternately with her two daughters and their families.Kemble's lasting historical importance...derives from the private journal she kept during her time in the Sea Islands on her husband's plantations, where she wrote a journal documenting the conditions of the slaves on the plantation and her growing abolitionist feelings.
