Background
Wimbourne House was designed in the Neo-Palladian style by William Kent. The Prime Minister Henry Pelham hired Kent to design the house at the time of his election to the office. Kent died in 1748, and Pelham himself died shortly after the completion of the house in 1754. The house became a fashionable society venue for European aristocracy at the end of the 19th century, frequented by Evelyn Waugh and Winston Churchill amongst others. The photograph commemorates the visit of the Princess.
