Background
In 1952 the Windsors were offered the use of a house by the Paris municipal authorities. The couple lived at 4 route du Champ d'Entraînement in the Bois de Boulogne, near Neuilly-sur-Seine, for most of the remainder of their lives, essentially living a life of easy retirement. They travelled frequently between Europe and America aboard ocean liners. In late 1971 the Duke of Windsor, who was a smoker from an early age, was diagnosed with throat cancer and underwent cobalt therapy. On 18th May 1972, Queen Elizabeth II visited the Duke and Duchess of Windsor while on a state visit to France. On 28th May 1972, ten days after Elizabeth's visit, Edward died at his home in Paris. His body was returned to Britain, lying in state at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. The funeral service took place in the chapel on 5th June in the presence of the Queen, the Royal family, and the Duchess of Windsor, who stayed at Buckingham Palace during her visit. Claude Roland was a close friend and escort of the Duchess in her later years.
