WATTS SAYS HE SHOULD NOT HAVE TAKEN A PENNY FOR HIS PAINTING 'PROGRESS'

WATTS

(George Frederic, 1817-1904, O.M., R.A., Painter and Sculptor)
Autograph Letter Signed to Mr Knowles
saying that he has sent back the proofs, a sad mess! I did not in submitting my scribble suppose that as a matter of course it would be thought worthy of a place in the 19th. I am but a stammerer so unused to the kind of effort to say what I could. 'I would that. my tongue could utter the thoughts that arise in me' but that is not for my tongue & what I have to say must be endeavoured often in another language less direct or intelligible, still I thought perhaps the direction of the thoughts of one who feels so deeply as I do, & has observed so long (well on in my 85th year) & seen so much, might receive indulgence from you if nothing more. Notwithstanding the indulgence I still feel is necessary & excuse the presumption, one of those who 'rush in there where Angels fear to tread' Will you add to my obligation by kindly looking over, or having what I have written looked over & any obvious faults corrected. Plus I do not expect the thing to be paid for, I am more than paid for by the acceptance of it. Hallam came to me asking if I had any sketch of his Father the Colony might purchase. I hae found one which I am endeavouring to finish in order to present it, Hallam's appointment seems in all ways a great success. I hope he has a fine future before him..., 3 sides 8vo., Limnerslease, Guildford, 9th April
