WOLSELEY
(Garnet, Viscount, 1833-1913, Field Marshal, C-in-C of the Army)
Fine Letter Signed to Mr HOLL
(Frank, 1845-1888, Painter, R.A.) saying that he has been so kind & generous that it is difficult to answer your letter. I can only do so by saying that I hope most sincerely you will study your own convenience and above all things your health in all that relates to the portrait. I shall be very much put out if you worry yourself in any way about it. There is no hurry, so please only send for me when it is quite convenient to yourself. I thought you looked a little tired the other day & wanted rest & country air. I don't want the uniform until Good Friday. I will with your permission send for it the day before..., 3 sides 8vo., War Office headed paper, 30th March

Background
Holl's picture Did you ever kill anybody Father? (1883), showa a young girl with her father's sabre. He used his daughter Nina as a model, and the sword of Lord Wolseley, whose portrait he was painting at the time. As recorded in the biography by another daughter: [Nina] had one day wandered into the studio after a sitting....calmly mounted the throne and taken up Lord Wolseley's sword, which happened to be lying across the chair. She contemplated it gravely for a few moments and then suddenly looking up said, 'Did Lord Wolseley ever kill anybody with this, father?'
