Background
She was the eldest of five children of John Colenso, the first Bishop of Natal, and continued his work, interceding on behalf of the Zulu people before the British Government. She made representations to the Crown on behalf of Dinuzulu and his uncles, in exile on St Helena from 1890 to 1897. The South Place Ethical Society, originally the South Place Institution/Chapel established in 1824, is a historic London-based humanist organisation, now located at Conway Hall. Famed for its radical roots in free thought, abolitionism, and rationalism, it shifted from a Unitarian chapel under William Johnson Fox to an ethical society in 1887, focusing on moral education without religious dogma.
