Autograph Letter Signed 'E. Baring' to Mr Wylde
saying that he has received his letter enclosing a letter to Mr Sturges, apparently intended for publication, which you ask me to return or to forward as I think best. If I were to forward a letter of this sort it would certainly be thought that I agreed in and approved of its contents. I, therefore return the letter to you. You must judge for yourself what to write to your friends in England..., 3 sides 8vo., Cairo, 16th April

Background
Baring was a statesman, diplomat and colonial administrator. He served as the British controller-general in Egypt during 1879, part of the international control which oversaw Egyptian finances after the Egyptian bankruptcy of 1876. He later became the agent and consul-general in Egypt from 1883 to 1907 during the British occupation, prompted by the Urabi revolt. This position gave Baring de facto control over Egyptian finances and governance.
