PRINCESS BEATRICE AFTER THE DEATH OF HER SON MAURICE

BEATRICE

(Mary Victoria Feodore, 1857-1944, Princess, Daughter & Companion of Queen Victoria)
Autograph Letter Signed 'Beatrice' to Mary
saying she was so touched at your thinking of writing to me about the loss of my beloved son & to thank you for all your words of sympathy. The thought that others are feeling for me does help keep on! This termination to 5 months of cruel anxiety, & how I shall miss that dear Boy, so full of life & brightness, & with such a brave unselfish nature. It is some consolation & a pride to think how nobly he had done his work, what a glorious death his was, & that he has gone to the grave regretted by all & leaving a bright example behind him. One can but bow one's head to God's will & pray to be given the strength to bear up bravely. I have still 2 dear sons left me, & how many there are who have lost their only ones..., 2 sides 8vo., Kensington Palace headed mourning paper, 13th November

Background
Prince Maurice of BATTENBERG (1891-1914) Princess Beatrice's youngest son and Victoria's youngest grandchild. Maurice most resembled his father, who died when he was only four, the same age his mother was when her own father died. He was his mother's favourite out of his brothers. He served in World War I, and was killed in action at Zonnebeke, in the Ypres Salient, on 27th October 1914. The 1st Battalion war diary states During the advance eastwards from the ridge the battalion came under terrific shell fire as well as rifle fire... Poor [Prince] Maurice was killed outright just on top of the ridge. Haig shared the news with GHQ at 7.00 the next morning. He said, By the death of H.H. Prince Maurice of Battenberg the Army loses a most gallant and valuable officer. In peace and war he has done his duty to King and Country. His mother was devastated by his death of her favourite son and began to retire from public life.
