“We, the undersigned witness to the following wager made at Hanover on the 3rd day of June in the year 1913 A.D. - to wit James Strachey Barnes lays £1000 (one thousand pounds) against £500 (fine hundred pounds) that in the year 1943, on the fourth day of June the government of England will not be an hereditary monarch or hereditary empire or other hereditary form of government. This bet is accepted on the above mentioned terms by Alfred Duff Cooper. In the event of the death of either of the above parties the obligation to pay is bequested as a debt of honour to the heir of the deceased, who shall similarly. have the right to claim the amount ue.
