POYNTER ON THE ADDRESS FOR RUSKIN’S 80TH BIRTHDAY
POYNTER
(Sir Edward J., 1836-1919, Painter, President of the Royal Academy)
Fine Autograph Letter Signed to “My dear Charlie”
saying that he is “in no way responsible for the address to Mr Ruskin. I promised to give my name as I was asked to do so, & it appeared to me it’s not of much use, at least on an unobjectionable proceeding. I have heard that he occasionally has moments when he rouses himself & takes interest in what is going on, & thought that it might please him to receive an address which would show that he is not forgotten. But I never gave authority for my name being used officially as P.R.A.. On the contrary Mr White must be quite aware from my letter (altho’ I did not say so in so many words) that I had no such intention. If you will give me a definite instance of his having used my name in that way - I mean suggesting that I have taken the thing up as P.R.A. - I will write to him and give him a piece of my mind & withdraw my name. His letter included an impertinence which I am sorry I did not assert in plainer language at the time as it is evident that a hint is lost upon him...”, 4 sides 8vo., 28 Albert Gate headed paper, 27th January
