The Earl took an active part in quelling insurrection in Ireland. On 2nd February 1773 he fought a duel in Marylebone Fields with Lord Townshend (Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, 1767-1772, later 1st Marquess), and was badly wounded. A carefully reasoned and at times passionate plea against duelling, by making it unfashionable.
