Background
Burgoyne served as engineer with Moore and Wellington in the Peninsular, and in France 1815-1818. Thirty years later he was reporting to the Duke on the defenceless state of Great Britain. He was sent to Constantinople in January 1854 to report on the defences of Turkey, and conducted the siege of Sebastopol, October 1854 to February 1855.
