TRENCH

(Sir Frederick William, 1775-1859, M.P. and General)
Autograph Note Signed to his printer, with transcription,
being an insertion about Mr. Laporte, who with great Liberality offered his theatre to their Majestys - gratis - altho' the day fixed on was that on which he intended to have his own annual Benefit, whereupon the King [William IV] was... pleased to intimate that he would honor the opera house by going there in State... a great advantage to Mr Laporte, especially if the decorations were allowed to remain till the End of the Season - But unfortunate Circumstances having disappointed all Mr Laportes Expectations the Committee resolved to present him with the Sum of £50... We must date it Jun 16 before the Kings Death [20th June 1837] & I will date my Letter on the same Day, original alterations, 2 sides 8vo., no date, c.

Background
Trench was ADC to George IV. He promoted schemes for embellishing London, including an embankment from Charing Cross to Blackfriars, not taken up till much later. Pierre François Laporte (1799-1841) managed the 'Italian Opera' at the King's Theatre, Haymarket (forerunner of Her Majesty's), from 1828-1831 and 1833-1841, with fine French and Italian singers in the lead parts. His London premières included I Puritani, La Sonnambula and Norma.
