Background
Tupper's 'Proverbial Philosophy', which came out in four series from 1839 to 1867, was at first thought by the American writer N.P. Willis to be a work of the 17th century. Tupper began expressing his love for his wife in the manner of Solomon's Proverbs, whence his articles on Marriage, Love, Friendship, and so on.
