Background
This engraving closely resembles in reverse a series of woodcut printers' devices used by Damian Zenanus at Venice (1603), and at Geneva by Crespin, Aubert, Chouet, and De Tournes (1634-1672), also Cramer, Perachon et Cramer fils (1734). See Paul Heitz, 'Genfer Buchdrucker- und Verlegerzeichen', nos. 36, 62, 81 and 124. An earlier version was used by Pesnot at Lyon, 1554-1584 (Silvestre 244).
