Background
Messager was the Artistic Director at Covent Garden, 1901-1907, and Director of the Opéra Comique, Paris, 1898-1903 and 1919-1920. In 1902 he conducted the first performance of Pelléas and Mélisande, which Debussy dedicated to him. From a small group of letters to Mme Stern.
