Background
Henry Wood, in 'My Life of Music', tells how he conducted for Marie Roze on her farewell tour with the Carl Rosa. Police had to be called out at the railway stations, the crowds made her sing from her hotel balcony, and they took the horses from the shafts of her carriage. She was Massenet's first 'Manon' in England.
