(Edmund)
Fine Receipt Document Signed to the Exchequer for £7, being 3 months' Annuity
due at Midsummer last past, on £200 advanced to the Exchequer on 9th February 1693 (new style 1694) towards carrying on a Vigorous War against France, printed with MS additions and original corrections, 1 side 14½ x 9½, the receipt 31st October
Item Date: 1702
Background
The 14% Annuities were to be paid out of duties on beer, ale and other liquors. Contributions up to £1,000,000 were invited by 1st May 1693 (see 4 William & Mary, 1692, c. 3), to be repaid during the single life of the contributor or his nominee at 10% p.a. till 1700, thereafter at 7%. But the same Act provided that if the £1,000,000 were undersubscribed, additional contributions at 14% on single lives could be accepted up till Michaelmas, 29th September 1693, and many held out for this better offer. Still undersubscribed, the terms were renewed by 5&6 William and Mary, c.7.
