Background
Mr. Gleig was almost the last survivor of Wellington's Peninsular Army, which he entered in 1812, serving in Spain and America. A son of the Bishop of Brechin, he was ordained in 1820 and from 1844 to 1875 was Chaplain-General of the Forces. He wrote 'The Subaltern', 1825, and other books on military history and biography including 'Warren Hastings'.
