Background
Hanham's battalion looked after the 11th Hussars and a number of infantry battalions at Fulwood Barracks, Preston. On 13th September 1861 he ordered Private Patrick McCaffery, aged 19, of the 32nd Regiment, to take the names of some children suspected of breaking windows. McCaffery was so ineffectual that Hanham put him on a charge, and on the 14th, Col. H.D. Crofton confined him to barracks for 14 days. Later that morning McCaffery observed Crofton and Hanham together and mortally wounded both with a single bullet, for which he was publicly executed after trial. His ghost is still said to haunt the old Officers' Mess.
