saying that since your kind visit I have been wanting, as I told you, to go with the Duke of Braganza [the future King of Portugal] and pay my homage to the Queen of Württemberg and visit the King, but his influenza has got so much worse that I have not been able to leave the house and I have been selfish enough to keep my future son-in-law at home with me, since he left this morning all I can do is to turn to you... to express to Their Majesties... our lively regret, and sadly cannot come to Nice to see him, but is looking forward to a happier occasion, with a carte de visite photograph of the Comte, unsigned, by L.
