Background
The long regency of Queen Cristina, who was by nature a strong Conservative, owed much to her ability to work with Liberals and to encourage consensus politics between the two main parties. The Duke of Montpensier had been a possible candidate for the throne in 1870, when the crown was settled on Amedeo of Savoy, and Alfonso XII's first wife, who survived the marriage only five months, was his daughter.
