Sir Edward Montagu, 1625-1672, was a staunch parliamentarian and general-at-sea, but in 1660 took the Navy over to Charles II and was created 1st Earl of Sandwich. Hinchingbroke House had formerly belonged to Sir Oliver Cromwell, uncle of the Protector, whence it passed by sale in 1627 to the Earl of Manchester and then to his brother, Sir Edward's father. Miss Olga Montagu (d. 1951), seen here with her father, was a niece of the 8th Earl and sister of the 9th.
