THE AGE OF REFORM

AUGUSTUS FREDERICK

(Duke of Sussex, 1773-1843, 6th Son of George III, President of the Society of Arts, Bibliophile)
LS to the Mayor, Aldermen, & Councillors of Denbigh,
thanking them for their congratulations on his restoration to sight, and for taking this earliest opportunity of his visit to Lord Dinorben to reiterate their loyalty to the King and the House of Brunswick, leading him to say that he, being equally aware of the... Compact which united us and the People with the Constitution, has hailed the recent changes, and reforms, which have taken place in yours, and other ancient Boroughs, as a Regeneration of public Rights, which had been inadvertently, long lost sight of... I shall ever make it my study, as I consider it my duty, to support & forward all such Measures & Improvements, as are suggested by the daily advancing Intellect, & increasing Prosperity of the Country, subject to an equal distribution of Justice, 2 sides folio, addressee and note of occasion on conjugate leaf, Kinmel Park, 22nd September

Background
Interesting as an extended statement of Reform principles, which, alone among his brothers, the Duke espoused. As usual, the Duke's signature is elaborately overwritten with lines and dots, here causing his pen to splutter in two or three places. A dozen or so initial letters have also been converted to capitals, possibly by the Duke himself.
