BOWRING
(Sir John, 1792-1872, M.P., F.R.S., Linguist, Governor and Ambassador, opened up trade with King Mongkut of Siam, favourite pupil of Jeremy Bentham)
Delightful autograph letter signed to Miss Ronalds,
saying Mrs Bowring sends me your note - throws upon me the awful responsibility of answering it, explaining that Tomorrow evening is the last evening we shall have with our friend Klentz - Last evenings, they say, should not be extensively social - but sordid - and selfish - thinking only about ourselves & not about others. We must therefore lock up Mr Klentz to morrow evening - & endeavor to extort from him all the confidential things he may have to say - for that long future - perhaps that Ever which is about to separate us. Yours truly, laid down on the conjugate leaf is an interesting cutting about Sir John, (newly knighted in 1854), the letter 1 side 8 x 5, addressee's name on side 4, Hove Cottage, 16th September
Item Date: 1826
on side 4, small corner defect and other light traces of laying down by corners
