Background
Particularly striking are the large designs of Crown Princess Victoria, with her and her husband's arms asymmetrically arranged, of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, and of Queen Louise of Denmark in a tall column. Occasionally the same design is found in varied colours or in black for mourning, as with the small AE within the garter for the Prince of Wales (Edward VII). The 1870s may be reckoned the high-water mark of these designs for variety and ingenuity.
