Taken at the time of their engagement. In November 1891 Princess Mary went to stay with the Royal family at Balmoral as the Queen wanted to get to know her as a possible granddaughter-in-law (and future Queen) and was delighted by her ten-day stay. Prince Eddy, the Duke of Clarence, was expected to propose in the New Year, but jumped the gun on 3rd December, when he and May were both at Luton Hoo. The engagement was announced on 7th December with the wedding date fixed for 27th February 1892. Sadly, six weeks later, he was dead from pneumonia.
