Background
Dilys Powell was film critic for the Sunday Times, 1939-1976, where her second husband, Leonard Russell, 1906-1974, was chief literary editor. Her first husband, H.G.G. Payne, 1902-1936, was Director of the British School of Archaeology at Athens, and she had a life-long love of Greece.
