Background
Kenealy defended the Tichborne Claimant for perjury, following the collapse of the latter's case for ejecting the tenant of the Tichborne estates. He made it the longest nisi prius trial on record. The violence of Kenealy's pleading caused him to be censured by the jury, and to be disbenched and disbarred from Gray's Inn on 17th August 1874. The case came in the popular mind to represent the difficulty of the working man in obtaining justice, on the strength of which Kenealy started 'The Englishman' newspaper and was elected for Stoke, 1875-1880.
