Background
When the Queen went into mourning in 1861, fears were entertained for her health, and to give her exercise, John Brown and her favourite pony were brought down from Balmoral. While she had no one now to call her 'Victoria', John Brown, who at least addressed her at times as 'Wumman', was the nearest thing. After his mother's death, Edward VII ordered all mementoes of Brown at Osborne to be destroyed.
