Background
Apparently taken during the visit in 1860 of the Prince of Wales to Canada and the United States, the first by the heir to the throne to either country. Lieutenant Teesdale, born in Grahamstown, South Africa, was seconded to help the Turkish Army in the Crimean war, and distinguished himself during the famous siege of Kars, June - November 1855, by his leadership, personal bravery and endurance when wounded. Taken prisoner when Kars was forced to surrender, he and the other British officers were introduced to the Tsar in March 1856, and set at liberty. Photographer Jeremiah Gurney (1812-1886) opened in 1840 at 707 Broadway the first American photo gallery, using the Daguerrotype process with great artistic skill.
