Background
Written the day before Westcott and Hort's Greek Text was published and six days before the Revised Version, in May 1881. Frederick Denison Maurice, the Christian Socialist, had been Hort's closest friend since 1850. The Horts, Westcotts and Pagets were close neighbours in St Peter's Terrace, Cambridge.
