[EDWARD VIII
(1894-1972, King of Great Britain, later the Duke of Windsor)]
Record of his Abdication Speech,
side 1 bears a printed 'Part I', the rest of the title with the date is in neat manuscript, apparently contemporary, the label on the other playing side is blank, 2 sides 10 inches, [Windsor Castle], December
Item Date: 1936
Background
An early exemplar of one of the most famous broadcasts of the 20th century. It was recorded by BBC engineers in defiance of official orders. An exceptionally rare piece.I have a playable recording of the record. There is a sound dropout on the second side but you can still hear what he says. This is more complete version than is generally known. You can hear him rustling of paper and he is introduced by John Reith who you can hear leaving the room with the door closing behind him - it was recorded at Windsor.
