Princess ADELHEID (1835-1900, daughter of the Queen's elder half-sister Feodora, 1807-1872, née Princess of Leiningen, and Ernst, 1794-1860, from 1825 4th Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg), with initials V.R. and date etched in the image, showing her full length in profile seated on a rock, her left hand to her chin, feet crossed, the whole pose skilfully drawn giving her a thoughtful look, together with a contemporary engraved portrait of Princess Adelheid, at about the same age, half length, full face with a lovely smile and holding a rosebud, titled in English, 3½ x 2¾ oval in margins 7 x 5, the etching 6 x 4,

Background
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert took up etching in 1840, building on their shared skill in drawing. The Queen jealously guarded their productions as reflecting their private family life and they are rarely found outside the Royal Collection at Windsor and the British Museum. The sitter's mother, Princess Feodora, the Duchess of Kent's daughter by her first husband, grew up with Queen Victoria at Kensington Palace and was married there in 1828. In 1856 Princess Adelheid married Friedrich VIII, Duke of Schleswig Holstein Sonderburg Augustenburg.
