Background
John was a commanding figure in Kronstadt, home of the Russian Navy, 20 miles west of St. Petersburg at the mouth of the Neva. John travelled widely in Russia and thousands visited him in Kronstadt. Alexander III died in his arms in 1894. Father John was canonized outside Russia in 1964 and inside Russia in 1990.
