Background
The Waleses went over to Denmark every summer to stay with Princess Alexandra's parents, King Christian IX and Queen Louise, and to meet her sister, (future Empress) Maria Feodorovna, 'Aunt Minnie', and her children. It was a chance to relax, to go to the Zoo informally, and swim. The Castle, built for the great Danish Minister J.H.E. Bernstorff, was bought in 1842 by Christian VIII as a summer residence. It remained in the Royal Family till the death of Prince Valdemar in 1939. Mrs Elizabeth Jones ('Jonnie', d. 13th May 1881), was for 14 years the much-loved nanny to the Prince & Princess of Wales's children.
