William Terriss had a penchant for nautical melodrama. As a young man he was mistaken for midshipman Prince Alfred. Later he spent 5 months in the Falklands (where Ellaline was born in 1871), and was elected captain by the crew of the homeward ship, a whaler, when they mutinied.
