Background
Of George III's brothers, William is said to have been his favourite, in spite of ups and downs, even though William had married secretly in 1766, before the 1772 Royal Marriages Act. Later Henry did useful service for the King - in 1779 he obtained a copy of French invasion plan, and the King was careful to consult him about his regiment, the 1st Foot Guards. In the year of this letter, the King asked him to attempt a reconciliation between the Prince of Wales and Princess Cartoline, but without success. An uncommon signature.
